How do I get my pics from phone onto PC?

I don't have a media card reader, and plugging the cord that came with the phone only charges it (on my computer). Is it used as a data cable as well? Because when I first plug them in togther, it asks me to install something, which I try to do, which fails.
Either way I haven't been able to upload my photos and having been trying for days. My phone doesn't say anything like "use phone as a "mass storage device" " either (like I read in a previous post).
Further help would be greatly appreciated!

download and install the alltel drivers. you can find them on this site. then when you hook up your phone it will ask you. but you have to have them stored on your card.
